For graphs and charts, you want to give a clear overview of the main features, and you can make comparisons if you see any. A piece of advice here: Don’t worry about mentioning specific numbers or data here – that comes later.

For maps, you should provide a general overview of the most noticeable changes that have occurred or will occur in the future. And for processes, simply state the number of stages, how it begins, and how it ends. When crafting your overview, try to use complex sentences that involve more than one clause. Use conjunctions like “while,” “although,” “with,” “even though,” “whereas” or “and” to join two pieces of information together.

And finally, remember to keep the structure of your overview simple. Write it immediately after the introduction paragraph, some people also prefer to give the overview at the end of the essay but it advisable to keep it immediately after the introduction so that all the important ideas can be gathered before the details are given in the further paragraph. This will make it clear to the examiner that you have identified the main features, and it will help you write the follow-up paragraphs with supporting data.
