IELTS General Test – Purpose, Format & Scoring Guide

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) General Test is a widely recognized English proficiency test designed for individuals who are aiming to migrate to English-speaking countries, particularly for immigration, work, or training purposes. In this blog, we will provide a comprehensive overview of the
IELTS General Test, including its purpose, test-taking methods, format, scoring, exam fees, and the validity of scores. We will also highlight why GCI Language is an excellent choice for IELTS General test preparation.

Purpose of the IELTS General Test

The IELTS General Test is primarily intended for individuals seeking to:

  • Migrate to English-speaking countries: Many countries, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, require proof of English proficiency for immigration purposes. This Test is widely accepted by immigration authorities.
  • Work in English-speaking environments: Employers in English-speaking countries often require proof of English language proficiency for job applicants. This Test assesses practical, everyday English skills needed in work and social contexts.
  • Train or study in non-degree programs: Some training programs and vocational courses in English-speaking countries require General Test scores as part of their admission process.

Test-Taking Methods

The IELTS General Test can be taken in two formats:

  • Paper-based Test:

This traditional format involves completing the test on paper. It is suitable for those who prefer writing by hand and are comfortable with a paper-based exam environment.

In this format, the test is taken on a computer. It offers more test date availability and quicker results. It is ideal for those who are comfortable using a computer and prefer a faster turnaround time for their scores.

Format of the IELTS General Test

The IELTS General Test is divided into four sections:

Listening

  • Duration: Approximately 30 minutes
  • Format: Four recorded monologues and conversations
  • Tasks: Multiple-choice, matching, plan/map/diagram labeling, form/note/table/flow-chart/summary completion, sentence completion

Reading

  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Format: Three sections with a variety of texts (e.g., notices, advertisements, instruction manuals, newspapers, magazines)
  • Tasks: Multiple-choice, identifying information, identifying writer’s views/claims, matching information/headings/features/sentence endings, sentence completion, summary/note/table/flow-chart completion, diagram label completion, short-answer questions

Writing

  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Tasks: Two tasks (Letter writing and essay writing)
  • Task 1: Write a letter (e.g., formal, semi-formal, or informal) based on a given situation.
  • Task 2: Write an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem.

Speaking

  • Duration: 11-14 minutes
  • Format: Face-to-face interview with an examiner
  • Tasks: Introduction and interview, long turn, discussion

General Test Scoring

The General Test uses a nine-band scale to measure English proficiency, with each section (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking) receiving an individual score. These section scores are then averaged to calculate the overall band score. The band scores range from 1 (Non-User) to 9 (Expert User).

Exam Fees

The exam fee for the IELTS General Test varies by country and test center. As of 2024, the fee in Canada is approximately CAD 319. It is advisable to check the official IELTS website or contact local test centers for the most accurate and up-to-date fee information.

Validity of Score

IELTS General Test scores are valid for two years from the date of the test. After this period, the scores are considered expired, and individuals may need to retake the test if their scores are required for applications or immigration purposes.
